The Impact of Community TB Activities: Mbet’s Triumph over TB
In August 2023, Mbet, a 25-year-old trainee Caterpillar driver, visited a family friend in Ikpe Annang, Essien Udim LGA. During his stay, he played football with his friend and some locals in a field. However, their regular day of fun and games was interrupted when the KNCV Nigerian team arrived in the area. The team was conducting an outreach program aimed at raising awareness about tuberculosis and screening people for the disease.
After the football game, Mbet and his friends underwent TB screenings. Three days later, Mbet received a call from the KNCV team, informing him that he had tested positive for tuberculosis. The team promptly contacted and counseled him, explaining the treatment process and initiating his six-month treatment journey. Mr. Umem, the ad-hoc staff, oversaw the treatment process and confirmed that Mbet Obong had completed his treatment and had recovered.
Further investigation revealed that Mbet’s elder sister had also been diagnosed with TB years earlier and had recovered successfully. This information was crucial in ensuring that Mbet received the appropriate treatment and care. He was grateful for the free screening, testing, and treatment provided by USAID through KNCV Nigeria and its dedicated volunteers. Thanks to the efficient, effective, and reliable efforts of the KNCV Nigeria team, he now feels healthier and more optimistic about his future.
