Fatima Ibrahim’s Journey to Recovery

Fatima Ibrahim, a resilient 26‑year‑old from Kano Municipal and a student of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, battled a persistent cough for more than five years. Throughout her university days, she sought medical help repeatedly, but each time she was misdiagnosed with asthma. Despite undergoing several treatments, her condition worsened, disrupting her studies and daily life.

In December 2024, after graduation, Fatima got married. Sadly, her wedding was overshadowed by the illness, she was hospitalized during the festivities. By late February 2025, her health deteriorated once again. Concerned, her husband took her to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), where she had further investigations at the Reference Laboratory and finally received the correct diagnosis of: Tuberculosis (MTB Detected High).

The diagnosis came at a difficult time. Nigeria was experiencing a severe shortage of anti‑TB drugs, leaving Fatima at risk of delayed treatment. Remembering her classmate Ahmad Shehu Wali, now a TB/HIV technical assistant on the GF C‑PPM project, in Kano State, working with KNCV Nigeria, Fatima reached out through her husband for help.

Ahmad responded immediately. He contacted colleagues in Kano, and together they sourced a complete kit of anti‑TB drugs. On March 4, 2025, the medication was way billed as an inter-state program drug kit transfer to the Plateau state Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Program office, allowing Fatima to begin treatment without delay under the watchful eyes of the Local Government Tuberculosis and Leprosy supervisor.

Months of strict adherence to her medication followed. With determination, support from her husband, and guidance from health workers, Fatima gradually regained her strength. Today, she has fully recovered. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of accurate diagnosis, timely intervention, and collaboration in saving lives from TB.

Fatima remains deeply grateful to her husband, who stood firmly by her side, and to Mr. Ahmad and KNCV Nigeria for their prompt response.
