EXPANDING ACCESS TO TB DIAGNOSIS: THE KNCV TB LAMP PILOT

KNCV and Human Diagnostic staff with the TB LAMP Device

In a bid to address the diagnostic challenges in-country, KNCV through a research study introduced a novel TB-Loop-mediated isothermal Amplification (TB-LAMP) platform to complement GeneXpert assay and increase diagnostic access to hard- to- reach areas and underserved communities lacking diagnostic tools. The outcome of the research which was conducted in 5 facilities across 2 states (Anambra and Nasarawa) showed that TB-LAMP is a veritable tool for TB diagnosis in both general population and the PLHIV. Research findings demonstrated that TB LAMP has a higher sensitivity compared to AFB Microscopy. It also has a comparable sensitivity to Genexpert.

Platform donation by Human Diagnostics

Following a successful implementation of the pilot, the Human diagnostic company (the exclusive distributor of TB-LAMP platform in Africa) donated a platform to KNCV Nigeria as their contribution to the fight against tuberculosis. The result of the pilot informed the development of the National TB-LAMP implementation guideline in May 2021 by NTBLCP. A total of 409 TB positive cases were detected from 5115 samples processed (with only 6 platforms) within 16 weeks of implementation (13th February to 5th June 2021). The high throughput and high TB yield were the key achievements driving the current roll out of TB LAMP platform in states with diagnostic challenges.  A 2-day hands-on training and sensitization of Health care Workers is scheduled to commence in Rivers State University Teaching Hospital on 17th June 2021.  Similar trainings and machine installations will happen in katsina, Taraba, Kano and Cross river in subsequent weeks.
